Chapter 6

TRICKS

“You HAVE to bring Mister P. to the soccer tournament this weekend,” said Rosie. “Everyone loves him and he’d make a great lucky mascot for our team.”

It was Thursday morning and Rosie, Tom, and Arthur were sitting together on the bus. Mister P. was getting used to the bus ride now, and he lay happily on the floor between them, headphones on, listening to music.

It had been such a busy week and Arthur had been concentrating so hard on being nice that he hadn’t had much time to think about the tournament this Saturday.

“I don’t know if Mister P. even likes soccer,” said Arthur. “And how do we know he’ll be lucky?”

“It won’t make much difference,” said Tom. “We never win anyway, and it can’t get worse than last weekend—not that I’m blaming you or anything.” Tom glanced at Arthur, and Arthur’s face blushed red-hot.

Last weekend’s game had been a disaster. The Hawks had lost 5–1. Liam had gotten overexcited and sung at the top of his lungs through the whole game. Arthur had begged Mom to take him away from the field—even just a little bit away—but she said Liam was fine and nobody minded.

Arthur minded. How was he supposed to concentrate on saving goals with his brother making such a racket? Surely Mom could see how embarrassing it was? Every time the ball came toward Arthur’s goal, Liam sang even louder and completely distracted Arthur. He didn’t save a single goal—not one—and that was the truth.

“I don’t know if I want to play this weekend,” said Arthur.

“You have to play,” said Rosie, sounding genuinely alarmed. “We need you—you’re our best goalie.”

“I’m your only goalie,” said Arthur glumly.

“Come on, cheer up,” said Tom. “At least if you bring Mister P. along, we might win the prize for the best mascot.” He nudged Arthur a few times until Arthur smiled.

“Actually, there isn’t a prize for best mascot,” said Elsa, butting in on their conversation. “And anyway, I think it’s illegal to have a real live bear as a lucky mascot.”

“Who cares,” said Tom. “You don’t make the rules. And you’re just jealous because your team has a boring teddy bear as a mascot.”

“At least our bear doesn’t have bad breath.” Elsa stuck her nose in the air.

Unfortunately, Elsa was a very good soccer player. Unfortunately, she played for the Wakefield Wanderers. And unfortunately, they were the best in the league and were almost guaranteed to win the tournament on Saturday.

“How would we get Mister P. to the game, anyway?” asked Arthur. “He won’t fit in our car.”

“I’ve already thought of that,” Rosie said. “My brother can give him a ride in the back of his pickup.”

Rosie’s brother, Jonno, worked in construction, and in his spare time he was the Hawks’ coach. His truck was very cool.

“Could I come too?” said Arthur. He’d always wanted a ride in Jonno’s truck. “Then Mom wouldn’t have to bring Liam.”

“But why don’t you want to bring Liam?” said Rosie. “He’s our best supporter.”

Arthur stared at Rosie.
